GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH
CISCO SYSTEMS FOR HIGH-TECH TRAINING

In an effort to best prepare students for jobs in the new
millennium, Golden West College has partnered with worldwide
Internet networking leader Cisco Systems of San Jose. As of today
(September 30, 1999), GWC has begun enrolling students in the
Local Cisco Networking Academy.

Instruction in GWC’s Cisco training program begins on Monday,
October 18.

Nearly a dozen students have already enrolled in the program,
following an e-mail announcement issued to potential students who
had earlier expressed an interest in Cisco courses.

With classes costing only $11 per unit, plus other minimal fees
for items such as materials and parking, this training is
available at a fraction of the cost charged by some other
institutions.

“This is an especially exciting announcement for the college to
make,” said Dr. Kenneth Yglesias, president of Golden West
College. “It comes as a direct response to needs expressed by our
students and members of the community, including area businesses.
We’re also gratified by the rapid pace in which our faculty and
staff were able to get the program up and running. GWC moves
quickly to meet the needs of our students.”

Earlier this year, the Huntington Beach community college became
the first in the county to offer an innovative and time-saving
16-week semester. As with the Cisco Systems Networking Academy,
the highly popular program was designed, approved and implemented
in a matter of months.

In the Cisco Systems Networking Academy at Golden West College,
students are taught how to design, build and maintain computer
networks, enabling them to develop the skills they need to
compete in an increasingly technology-dependent workplace.

“Network administrators are essential to the success of almost
all businesses, academic institutions and local and state
government, yet most companies simply can’t find people with the
right skills to meet the demand,” said Cisco Chairman John
Morgridge. “Thatıs why it’s so important that today’s students
get the skills needed for the jobs of the 21st century.”

For the October 18 session, GWC will offer Cisco Networking 1 and
four related computer courses: Computer Concepts; PC Windows
95/98 & DOS Essentials; Introduction to Networking; and A+ PC
Hardware.

Meeting days, times and other pertinent information (noted in the
accompanying breakout box) are available on GWC’s Web site at
http://www.gwc.cccd.edu and in the college’s Admissions and
Records Office. Applications for new students are also available
in both places.

Students must register in person at the GWC Admissions and
Records Office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday
through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. The office
can be reached at (714) 895-8306.

Since its inception in October of 1997, the Cisco Networking
Academy program already offers high-tech training to 21,000 high
school, college and technical school students in 50 states,
Washington, D.C. and 31 countries. About 2,000 students graduated
from the program in spring 1999 and 10,000 will graduate in
spring 2000.

Golden West College is one of a growing number of schools to
bring this high-tech training program to students around the
world. Students who complete the four levels of instruction
(Cisco Networking 1 through Cisco Networking 4) are prepared to
take a standardized test to qualify as a Cisco Certified
Networking Associate (CCNA).

Students who obtain this certification increase their employment
opportunities in the information economy. Academy graduates are
also prepared to build upon their networking training by pursuing
advanced education in science and engineering fields at colleges
and universities.

The program is intended to develop a new generation of
network-savvy workers to fill the growing number of job openings
in the information economy.

It provides course work for a complete range of basic through
advanced networking concepts — from pulling cable, through such
complex concepts as subnet masking rules and strategies. Through
the academy program, students learn fundamental networking
concepts and have a chance to apply their new skills in the
project-based, hands-on lab portion of the curriculum.

enrollment at the Huntington Beach college.

GWC also offers short-term, 8-week courses starting throughout
the fall semester. The highly successful Weekend Express program
allows students to complete courses in accelerated six-week
blocks and has several starting dates throughout the semester.

Open enrollment and registration for the Cisco, short-term and
Weekend Express programs are under way.
